Mission
The Central Innovation Network’s mission is to increase the success
and prestige of the Central part of the Oxford to Cambridge Arc. We do this
by bringing together the existing diverse body of key people already resident
in our region to create wealth from science and technology
Why CIN was formed
Established in 2000 by a number of successful individuals already working
to identify and deliver business opportunities from science and technology
at the heart of the Oxford to Cambridge Arc. CIN is modelled on the Cambridge
Network. CIN is a business-led network, focussed on helping busy individuals
to quickly find out what is going on in their community of interest and to
facilitate deal-flow. It was originally formed because nothing like it existed
in the area. The success of Oxfordshire, London and Cambridge economies seems
to be partly due to strong networks and ease in finding appropriate local support.
In this area there were lots of small, non-technology-focussed networks, often
confined to strict administrative boundaries.
We do not compete with other networks, but try to act as a network-of-networks.
We offer details a wide variety of events from which individuals can make best
use of their very scarce networking time or limited time to learn new skills
or ideas.

The way CIN works
CIN works for the long-term benefit of the centre of the Oxford to Cambridge
Arc, ignoring artificial sector and regional boundaries. Its ethos is co-operation
and action – “just do it – don’t complain”.
The Network has had some support from the public sector, but in the main
part has relied on goodwill and pro bono support from successful, knowledgeable
and well connected people. It binds local networks together rather than competes
with them and develops relationships with a diverse range of people. We generate
new ideas to bring coherence to the infrastructure in our geographic area,
for example by being active participants and promoters of the Oxford to Cambridge
Arc and the Design Council’s Humanising Technology programme. We leverage
support for our members whether it brings direct benefit to CIN or not.
